Jumbo-Visma scored a hat-trick on the second stage of the Tour de Burgos on Wednesday after a heavy fall which took part of the peloton a few hectometres from the finish. While the riders of the Jumbo had taken the lead of the peloton to bring their sprinter, the 4th rider of the yellow train was surprised by a speed bump, lost his balance and took a dozen riders in his fall.
It was finally the Dutchman Timo Roosen who crossed the line first, followed by Edoardo Affini and Chris Harper. Victim of the fall, Frenchman Damien Touzé (AG2R Citroën) was evacuated by ambulance. “He suffered a head trauma, followed by a concussion following his fall. He was taken care of by the race medical team and transported conscious by ambulance to hospital“Said AG2R Citroën in a press release. The Dutchman of the Jumbo-Visma David Dekker also joined his bus supported by the members of the management, with many wounds and scratches on the entire body.

Previously, the breakaway of the day had been caught about forty kilometers from the finish. The final was very turbulent, with in particular two unsuccessful breakaway attempts from Tao Geoghegan Hart and another from Vincenzo Nibali in the final. Ruben Guerreiro finished 6th, seven seconds behind Roosen, at the same time as Fernando Gaviria (7th). The first Frenchman, Lilian Calmejane, finished 8th in the stage.
Overall, Santiago Buitrago, winner of the first stage the day before, remains the leader ahead of Ruben Guerreiro. On Thursday, the third stage will start from Quintana Martin Galindez and will end in Villarcayo, notably crossing the Picon Blanco, an off-category pass.
