It’s a rather complicated transfer window for Stade Rennais this summer. With the departure of the Atlas Lion Nayef for 35 million at West Ham and the long injury of Warmed Omari, the Breton club found itself with Loïc Badé as the only training central defender in its workforce. A real lack for coach Bruno Genesio, who will have to play in the Europa League next season in addition to domestic competitions. The sports management has finally found its reinforcement for the central hinge: it is the Belgian defender of Bologna Arthur Theate.
“International with the Red Devils, the central defender of Bologna FC, 22, has joined Stade Rennais FC. He has signed a four-year contract. (…) The one whose potential is confirmed from season to season will therefore discover Europe with Stade Rennais FC Our new defender intends to shine in Red and Black to catch the eye of the Belgian coach once again with a view to the next World Cup”, can we read in the press release of the Rouge-et-Noir. Arrived for around 22 million euros (including 3M bonus), this left-handed reinforcement, like the Moroccan, will replace him in the left central defender position in the Rennes system.

Already international with the Red Devils
Born in Liège, Arthur Theate first traveled through several training centers and youth teams in the “flat country” before signing his first professional contract with Ostend. And after only one season played in the Jupiler Pro League (29 league matches, 3 goals), the 1.86m defender already has the opportunity to discover one of the five major championships: Serie A. Bologna concludes with the KVO a loan with a paid purchase obligation of 6 million euros paid this summer by the Rossoblu, who will therefore make a nice capital gain on his transfer.
With the check for two tens of millions of euros, the one who had his first appearances with the Red Devils in November 2021 (3 selections) will become the most expensive defender in the history of Belgian football. At only 22, he is already considered one of the future holders of the black-yellow-red central defense. Accustomed to evolving in a defense with 3 during his young career, he is also comfortable in a hinge with 2 defenders, which will allow him to quickly integrate into the Genesio team. He will also find his teammate with the Red Devils Jérémy Doku, who arrived in Brittany from Anderlecht.
