Formula 1 – Surprise: Fernando Alonso (Alpine) will succeed Sebastian Vettel at Aston Martin

We imagined Mick Schumacher, Nyck de Vries, even Daniel Ricciardo. But Aston Martin has chosen the opposite. Just days after Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement at the end of the season, the British team revealed the identity of his successor in 2023: it is Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard, who had made his return to F1 with Alpine, decided to take on a new challenge. He signed a multi-year contract.

The double world champion had seen his situation weaken with the emergence of Oscar Piastri, champion of F3 then F2 in two seasons and darling of the Alpine academy. This, while he has continued to demonstrate, through often encouraging, sometimes surprising performances, that he still had his place in F1 despite his 41 years.

Alonso therefore preferred to take the loophole and thus avoid the risk of ending up in the water. Even if, at first glance, he will have to take a step back: since the start of the season, Aston Martin has only scored 20 points. Only the Williams team did worse. Alpine is fighting for fourth place in the “Manufacturers” championship.
