For its tenth anniversary, Google Play offers itself a small change

Didn’t notice anything? The Play Store is celebrating its tenth anniversary and Google has decided to give it a new logo. The firm also returns to the evolution of its application store.

Ten years ago, call me Maybe was at the top of the music charts and Android was only a few years old. 2012 is also the year chosen by Google to launch its Nexus 4 and Google Play. The suite of applications, which notably includes the Play Store, is therefore celebrating its tenth anniversary and its creator has decided to celebrate the event with a new logo. The change is not revolutionary, but it had been a few years since Google had reviewed the emblem of its service. The Mountain View company wanted to change the general appearance of its logo, in order to offer less bright colors. The new version with green, yellow, blue and red hues must better correspond with the other services of the American giant. This subtle evolution follows that of the Chrome browser logo, also updated at the start of the year.

“We’re introducing a new logo that better reflects the magic of Google and matches the branding shared by many of our products (Search, Assistant, Photos, Gmail, etc.)”, explains Tian Lim, vice-president of Google Play. On closer inspection, the changes are real and if the triangle remains, Google has indeed decided to make its colors less vivid. We also note that the layout does not change with always blue, red, yellow and green; but the proportions change. Thus, blue no longer dominates as much and leaves more room for the famous colors of the search engine. Finally, the triangle has a slightly different shape and the corners are more curved.

A new logo for ten years of Google Play

This change comes as Google Play celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. Those who knew the Android universe during this period probably remember that the first versions of the OS hosted the Android Market. Google finally decided to merge different services by creating the Play application suite. Ten years later, we notice moreover that the sequel Play doesn’t really exist anymore.

The American giant preferred to abandon Google Play Music in favor of YouTube Music. It also decided to put aside its Google Play Movies & TV app to launch Google TV. These changes have allowed the firm to better focus on the Play Store – its famous application store – and on books with Play Books. Note that if Android can accommodate other application stores, the Play Store is a must.

Google also returns to the evolution of its application, supporting figures. “A decade later, more than 2.5 billion people in over 190 countries use Google Play every month to discover apps, games and digital content »says Tian Lim. “And over 2 million developers work with us to grow their businesses and reach people around the world”.

To celebrate 10 years of Google Play, the American giant is also offering boost Play Points. Members who activate this “booster” (activation dates vary by country) will earn ten times more points on purchases, including in-app purchases.
